The term MDF is short for "medium-density fibreboard". The name is derived from the fact that the density of these boards is between that of sawn timber and that of high-density fibreboard (HDF) (also known as wet process hardboard). MDF boards are used in interior construction and attic conversions. In addition to cupboards and cabinet systems, MDF boards have for a number of years been used in powder-coated form as tabletops and cover boards. Their high bending and tensile strength also make them popular with manufacturers of high-quality speaker systems. MDF can be treated in many ways with paint and other coatings, creating a smooth, clean surface with profiled edges, cut-outs, etc.
